Security And Safety When Finding A Room To Share
Students, travellers and contract workers all sometimes look for a room to share as a short term option that enables them to live cheaply and save money. If you are looking for this type of accommodation then you must seriously consider if you will feel comfortable sharing your living and sleeping space. If you are living with a friend then you will trust your roommate and not worry about leaving your personal possessions in the bedroom. But if you are sharing with a stranger then you should take extra precautions to safeguard your belongings.
Your security and safety are of paramount importance, so if you feel at all ill at ease or nervous of your room mate then do not proceed with the arrangement. This can sometimes be difficult to address but if you are staying in a hostel or other low cost accommodation then there will usually be other rooms and people around who can help sort out a different room and/or sharer.
If you are making a private arrangement " for example via emails on the internet , take some time to chat to the other person and then trust your instincts about their character and decide if you feel that they are trustworthy. It is better to appear rude and unfriendly than to spend your time worrying about the person who is sharing your sleeping and living area.
Wherever you find a room to share it is always a good idea to make sure that you do not leave any cash or valuables in the room, this can be difficult but don"t be tempted to just hide your stuff inside something random " a thief will check everywhere and find anything if they really want to. Try to keep your cash in your bank account and only withdraw as much as you need on any one day, passports and any important papers should be kept in your wallet or bag.
It may seem over the top to keep all of these points in mind but the devastation and bureaucracy you will have to deal with if anything important is stolen could waste a huge amount of your time and spending sleepless nights worrying about being safe may spoil your experience of having a room to share whilst living or studying in the UK.
